E' sabato, a Roma splende il sole ed ecco la pubblicazione della recensione che mi arriva da Torino. E' LaFetch che me la manda e oggi ci parla di Of Montreal. Se non li conoscete è il caso di ascoltarli subito! Questo il suggerimento di Federica Farassini, Biella, 26 anni, cantante e appassionata di tanti diversi generi musicali.

Quando ho aperto il link per ascoltare Fugitive Air, Youtube mi ha chiesto se ero consapevole di quello che stavo per vedere.. ahahah! Esageratoni!

of Montreal - Lousy with Sylvianbriar

Ammetto che ho conosciuto of Montreal grazie alla soundtrack di the O.C. (ero innamorata di Seth, del suo essere nerd e dei suoi gusti musicali). Kevin Barnes, padre fondatore ed unico membro stabile della band dall'inizio alla fine, non dev'essere un tipo molto semplice, ma è sicuramente vulcanicamente produttivo: dal 1997 fino ad oggi ha pubblicato dodici

album, una media decisamente alta. Ha scritto ed inciso tanto da solo, con metodi piuttosto schizofrenici, ma ha anche avuto la brillante idea di lasciarsi circondare da un collettivo di musicisti che non hanno nulla da invidiare a nessuno.

Non so se si è capito finora, ma a me of Montreal non ha mai fatto impazzire, anzi. Quest'ultimo album (uscito l'8 ottobre 2013) l'ho ascoltato un po' così, pour parler, e quando è partito sono rimasta sconcertata perchè non mi ricordavo che suonasse così bene. Un'ouverture (Fugitive Air), degna di un ritorno agli anni '60, con una slide guitar fighissima e la voce di Barnes in quasi totale overdrive mi han fatto venir voglia di ascoltarmi tutto il disco. Che si sviluppa bene, ammetto, attraverso un pop rock psichedelico ben miscelato insieme al più classico country e folk rock al quale gli americani sono così affezionati (Triumph of Disintegration e Hegira Émigré su tutte) nonostante contenga canzoni delle quali non capisco il senso contestualizzate qui (vd. Syrens of Your Toxic Spirit e Raindrop in My Skull), che mi fanno ricordare perchè non ho mai comprato un suo disco.

In ogni caso, nel complesso lo consiglio.

I admit that several years ago I've known of Montreal thanks to his participation to the O.C. soundtrack (I was in love with Seth, with his being such a nerd and of his music tastes).

Kevin Barnes, founding and only stable member of the band since its origin, doesn't have to be a very simple person, but for sure he's a volcanic, productive person: since 1997 he has released twelve albums, a decisively high average. He wrote and pressed a lot on his own, with pretty schizophrenic methods, but he has also had the brilliant idea of letting a collective of musicians surround oneself.

I don't know whether since now is it clear, but I'm not a real of Montreal's fan.

I listened to his latest album (released on 10/08) just in order to do something,

pour parler, and when it began I got puzzled because I didn't remember him sounding such good. The ouverture (Fugitive Air), worthy of a '60s coming back, with a hypercool slide guitar and Barnes' voice in almost complete overdrive gave me a reason to listen to the entire album. I admit it well develops through a psychedelic pop rock mixed up with a more classical folk and country rock (Triumph of Disintegration and Hegira Émigré over all) even though it contains songs that I don't understand the meaning here contextualized (Syrens of Your Toxic Spirit and Raindrop in My Skull), that remember me why I've never bought a of Montreal's album.

Anyway on the whole I recommend it.
