Bentornati all'appuntamento che abbiamo con le recensioni di LaFetch. Federica Farassini di Biella, cantante e ormai rinomata critica di musica. Afghan Whigs – Do to the Beast
Sono tornati! Il 2014 è una buona annata musicalmente parlando.
Quando un album si apre con pezzi tipo Parked Outside non ci si può che aspettare grandi cose. E gli Afghan Whigs, al loro ritorno sulla scena dopo lo scioglimento del 1998, non deludono le aspettative. Sono tornati, e sono tornati per far capire all'ascoltatore medio di musica contemporanea che un buon 80% di quello che va molto di moda tra le band più in voga, loro l'avevano già scritto e suonato anni fa e che sono ancora più che in grado di produrre roba fighissima. L'album scorre veloce e piacevole. Dieci tracce che ci rendono un Greg Dulli in gran forma, pieno di acutini e note alte che sa perfettamente che non riuscirà a riprodurre dal vivo e che danno quella nota un po' “stonata” al tutto, ma che sono decisamente il marchio di fabbrica della band di Cincinnati.
Dentro a questo album c'è tutto quello che più mi piace e mi esalta della musica: le chitarrone, ma anche le chitarrine, il giusto utilizzo dell'effettistica, i coretti, l'accuratezza delle scelte stilistiche, ma soprattutto tanto cuore.
Il video di Algiers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovhzeqIaggY), che ha anticipato l'uscita dell'album, è un capolavoro: con questa atmosfera alla Sergio Leone ci da esattamente l'idea dell'intento della band: portare il “moderno” nel classico rock 'n roll. E, a mio avviso, ci riescono alla perfezione.
Bentornati, è stata una lunga attesa, ma ne è valsa la pena. Vi amo.
Afghan Whigs - Do to the Beast
They're back! 2014 is definitely a good year, musically speaking.
When an album opens up with songs like Parked Outside you can't expect anything but something amazing from the rest. And the Afghan Whigs, at they're coming back on scene after the break up of 1998, don't let down the expectations. They're back, and they're back in order to let the average contemporary listener that a good 80% of the music he listens they'd already wrote and played it several years ago and that they're still capable to be one of the coolest band around.
The LP sounds good and fast. 10 tracks with a Greg Dulli really in shape, full of acutes and high notes that he knows he won't absolutely be able to reproduce live and this gives that sound a bit “out of tune”, but that are definitely the brand of the band from Cincinnati.
This album contains about everything I like of music: hard guitars and soft guitars, the right use of the effects, chorus where needed, the accuracy of the stylistic choices, but above all a soul.
Algiers' video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovhzeqIaggY), that anticipated the coming out of the LP, is a masterpiece: with that 'Sergio Leone's' atmosphere it gives us exactly the idea of the aim of the band: insert modernity into the classic r'n'r. And, in my opinion, they perfectly fulfill it.
Welcome back, it's been long without you, but it deserved.
